You are probably wondering, what is ‘The 365 Day Project”.  Well, it is a challenge of sorts, a challenge to dine at home only.  That means no going out to dinner or ordering take-away.  The economy is in the crapper, especially in the States.  Everyone is pinching pennies and tightening their belts.

That means 365 days of eating in, not out.  Whether it be leftovers, cooking meals fresh that day or hosting a potluck. You just avoid spending money at a dining establishment.  Everytime you are tempted to go out to eat, take the cash you would usually spend and place it in a jar.  On December 31st, 2011, count how much money you saved and let me know.  I would love to hear your thoughts, what you cooked, etc.

For this challenge, I will post every meal I made for the year.  Recipes can be found on our Two Vegan Boys blog. I will post the meal, my thoughts, times when I was tempted to go out to eat or order take-away and what I thawed from the deep-freeze.  If you can’t go for a full year, try a month or two or three.

Someone once mentioned that going out to eat with friends is nice social interation.  I agree, but host a potluck or have a friend host a potluck, have a bar-b-que as well. It saves money and you get to try a variety of home cooked dishes.

So, give it a try. I look forward to the start of this challenge beginning January 1, 2011.  Good luck!

Sounds like a great idea! Before jumping 100% on board, I gotta discuss it with the hubs. We may try a modified version, like no more that 1 or 2 meals out/month because I haven’t yet successfully cooked flavorful or edible Thai food, which is his absolute favorite type of food.

That sounds good, G. Hmm, Thai food, eh? As great of a cook as you are, I’m sure you could find some recipes or a book. 🙂 Thanks for joining in the project/challenge. I would love to here how you and the hubs do.

Sad for me, I work in the food industry! How about once a year? As a treat? 🙂

Andrea-Yay! I am so glad to hear you are going to give this a try. It will definitely be a challenge for all of us, but so worth it when we see what we have accomplished.

This sounds like a fun challenge! Even if I could get down to once a month, it would be an improvement. Some days I eat out at restaurants for all three meals. Pitiful. The money I could save could take us to Hawaii next Christmas!

Yay! Glad you are going to give it a try. And just think how awesome Hawaii will be this time next year! 🙂

  7. I’m going to talk to the hubby about it and may give this a try. The only troubles I foresee are that my family likes to go out to eat a lot and I don’t know how well I will do giving up veggie heaven. I may try to see about cutting down to once a month or once every 3 months.

That sounds good, Karina. A little effort is better than none. 🙂

I’m so impressed!! I can’t do it this year (no real kitchen, more like a microwave, tiny sink, and one shelf on a fridge, and no freezer), but next year I am definitely doing this! I’m so excited to see how you and your family do! Such an inspiration!! I hope you guys save lots and lots of money-Joshua Tree is beautiful and so is the Grand Canyon!!
